## Tour Detail

DAY 01. ISTANBUL – TURIN: THE GATEWAY TO THE GRAND TOUR – CAPITAL OF SAVOY – MUSEO EGIZIO

Meeting at the departure gate of Istanbul Airport International Terminal at the time specified by our guide. After baggage drop, passport control and check-in procedures, we depart for Turin at 07:30 on Turkish Airlines flight TK1309. On arrival at Turin Airport at 09:30 local time, we transfer to the city centre by our waiting vehicle. Turin, the first major stop in Italy for Grand Tour travellers who crossed the Mont Cenis pass in the 18th century, was also home to the Royal Academy, where young English aristocrats enrolled to learn horsemanship, fencing and court etiquette. Serving as the capital of the House of Savoy from 1563 and briefly as the first capital of united Italy between 1861 and 1865, the city is read through this political heritage on our walk. Starting from Piazza Castello, surrounded by the Royal Palace and Palazzo Madama, we follow the arcaded Via Roma along the grid plan inherited from the Roman camp of Augusta Taurinorum, reaching Piazza San Carlo, known as "the drawing room of Turin", with its twin churches and historic cafés. After free time for lunch, we visit the Museo Egizio, founded in 1824 and considered the oldest museum in the world devoted exclusively to Ancient Egyptian civilisation (entrance ticket included in the package). It is said that Champollion, who deciphered hieroglyphs and studied the collection in those same years, remarked that "the road to Memphis and Thebes passes through Turin." The sculpture gallery, papyri, and the funerary objects of Kha and Merit from the workers' village of Deir el-Medina allow us to read a civilisation not only through its pharaohs but also through everyday life. Transfer to our hotel after the visit. Overnight in Turin.

DAY 02. TURIN – GENOA – SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE – PORTOFINO: "LA SUPERBA" AND THE RIVIERA

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we cross the Apennines and head for the Ligurian coast. Our first stop is Genoa, which Petrarch called "La Superba" ("The Proud"), the capital of the Republic of Genoa, a centuries-long rival of Venice in the Mediterranean. Accompanied by our guide, we see from the outside the Strade Nuove, built by banker aristocrats in the 16th century and introduced to Europe by Rubens in his 1622 publication, today's UNESCO World Heritage Via Garibaldi, and its palaces. These "Palazzi dei Rolli," obliged to host the official guests of the Republic, illustrate that Genoa's power was measured not only at the port but also in its banks. Descending to the harbour via the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and Piazza De Ferrari, we touch on the impressions left by Byron and Dickens, who lived in the city, and on the founding of Italy's oldest football club here by the English in 1893. After free time to sample local flavours, especially pesto alla genovese, we continue to Santa Margherita Ligure. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we reach Portofino by boat. Castello Brown, overlooking the small harbour, takes its name from Montague Yeats-Brown, the British consul in Genoa who bought it in 1867. Elizabeth von Arnim's novel "The Enchanted April," which drew English readers to the Italian Riviera, was also born on this coast. After a stroll and free time around the colourful piazzetta, we return to Santa Margherita and then depart for Turin. Overnight in Turin.

DAY 03. TURIN: MAUTO – MOLE ANTONELLIANA AND NATIONAL CINEMA MUSEUM – MILAN

After breakfast, we continue our Turin tour. First, we visit the Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile – MAUTO, which tells how this city, where FIAT was founded in 1899, transformed Italy into an industrial nation. In the museum on the banks of the Po River, the collection ranging from the first motor vehicles to classic models of Italian design treats the automobile both as an engineering product and as a matter of social history and style. Here we also see the influence of Turin's design schools, such as Pininfarina and Giugiaro, on global automotive aesthetics. Next, we move to the Mole Antonelliana, which dominates the city's skyline. Designed by architect Alessandro Antonelli, begun in 1863 as a synagogue but later handed over to the municipality due to its increasing height, and completed in 1889 as one of the tallest brick structures in the world, the monument now houses the National Cinema Museum. Among the galleries rising beneath the dome, we discover how Turin, before Rome, was the capital of Italian cinema through early major productions such as Cabiria (1914), and how the city moved from optical toys to film sets. Visiting order may change depending on museum opening days and reservation times. After free time for lunch, we leave Turin and reach Milan through the rice fields of the Po Valley. Upon arrival, we check into our hotel. Overnight in Milan.

DAY 04. MILAN: DUOMO – GALLERIA – LA SCALA – HEMINGWAY'S MILAN – CASTELLO SFORZESCO

After breakfast, we begin our city tour of Milan. The Duomo, whose foundation was laid in 1386 and whose facade was finally completed at the beginning of the 19th century by Napoleon's order, is a monument to the patience and wealth of the city across a construction process spanning more than five centuries. We admire from the square its marble facade and thousands of statues, the most ambitious example of Italian Gothic. Then we pass through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, designed by Giuseppe Mengoni in the early years of united Italy and one of the most magnificent glass-roofed arcades in 19th-century Europe, to reach the façade of La Scala Opera House, opened in 1778. Walking along Via Manzoni, we follow, through our guide's commentary, the area where the young Hemingway was treated after being wounded at the front in 1918 at the American Red Cross Hospital, and how this period is reflected in the Milan scenes of "A Farewell to Arms." Our walk concludes via Via Dante in the courtyards of Castello Sforzesco, the palace of the Sforza dynasty where Leonardo da Vinci worked in the service of Ludovico il Moro. In the afternoon, free time to explore independently the fashion district Quadrilatero della Moda, surrounded by Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga, or the art galleries of Brera. We meet at the time specified by our guide and return to the hotel. Overnight in Milan.

DAY 05. LAKE COMO – STRESA – LAKE MAGGIORE – MALPENSA – ISTANBUL

After breakfast, we complete our hotel check-out and, with our luggage, head for the Alpine lakes region carved by glaciers. Our first stop is Como, the town where the Roman writer Pliny the Younger was born and where Alessandro Volta, inventor of the battery, spent his life. We take a short walk through the historic centre, from the Duomo, which combines Gothic and Renaissance styles, down to the lakeside, and enjoy the lake view opening toward the Alpine silhouette. Lake Como, frequently featured in 19th-century literature from Shelley's letters to Stendhal's novels, became a way of life with the villas of European aristocracy. We then continue to Stresa on the shore of Lake Maggiore. With its elegant lakeside promenade, Belle Époque hotels, and views of the Borromean Islands, Stresa also left its name in diplomatic history with the 1935 Stresa Conference, where the heads of government of Britain, France and Italy met at the Borromeo Palace on Isola Bella. The young Hemingway, whose traces we followed in Milan the previous day, came here in autumn 1918 for a convalescence leave; the lake scenes in the final chapters of "A Farewell to Arms" were born from these days. After lunch and free time by the lake, we meet at the time specified by our guide and transfer to Milan Malpensa Airport, about an hour away. After ticketing and baggage procedures, we depart for Istanbul at 19:45 on Turkish Airlines flight TK1876. Arrival at Istanbul Airport at 23:40 marks the end of our tour. We look forward to meeting you on our next journey.
