## Dettaglio del giro

DAY 01 ISTANBUL – TORINO: THE GATEWAY TO THE GRAND TOUR – CAPITAL OF SAVOY – MUSEO EGIZIO

Meeting at the Istanbul Airport International Departures Terminal at the time indicated by our guide. After baggage drop, passport control and check-in procedures, we depart for Torino at 07:30 on Turkish Airlines flight TK1309. Upon arrival at Torino Airport at 09:30 local time, we transfer to the city centre by our waiting vehicle. Torino, the first major stop for Grand Tour travellers crossing the Mont Cenis pass in the 18th century, was also home to the Royal Academy where young English aristocrats enrolled to learn horsemanship, fencing and court etiquette. The city, capital of the Savoy dynasty from 1563 and the first capital of united Italy between 1861 and 1865, is read through this political heritage on our walk. Starting from Piazza Castello, surrounded by the Royal Palace and Palazzo Madama, we follow the arcaded Via Roma along the grid plan inherited from the Roman camp of Augusta Taurinorum, reaching Piazza San Carlo, with its twin churches and historic cafés, known as the "drawing room of Torino." After free time for lunch, we visit the Museo Egizio, founded in 1824 and considered the oldest museum in the world devoted exclusively to Ancient Egyptian civilisation (entrance ticket included in the package). It is said that Champollion, who deciphered hieroglyphs, remarked while studying the collection in those same years that "the road to Memphis and Thebes passes through Torino." The sculpture gallery, papyri and the tomb goods of Kha and Merit from the workers' village of Deir el-Medina allow us to read a civilisation not only through its pharaohs but also through everyday life. After the visit, transfer to our hotel. Overnight in Torino.

DAY 02 TORINO – GENOA – SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE – PORTOFINO: "LA SUPERBA" AND THE RIVIERA

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we cross the Apennines and head to the Ligurian coast. Our first stop is Genoa, which Petrarch called "La Superba" ("The Proud"), capital of the Republic of Genoa, Venice's great rival in the Mediterranean for centuries. Accompanied by our guide, we view from the outside the Strade Nuove built by the banker aristocracy in the 16th century, introduced to Europe by Rubens in a book published in 1622, today's UNESCO World Heritage Via Garibaldi, and its palaces. These "Palazzi dei Rolli," obliged to host the official guests of the Republic, show that Genoa's power was measured not only in its port but also in its banks. Descending to the harbour via the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and Piazza De Ferrari, we touch on the impressions left by Byron and Dickens, and on the founding of Italy's oldest football club here by the English in 1893. After free time to try local specialities, above all pesto alla genovese, we move on to Santa Margherita Ligure. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we reach Portofino by boat. Castello Brown, overlooking the small harbour, takes its name from Montague Yeats-Brown, the British consul in Genoa who purchased it in 1867. Elizabeth von Arnim's novel "The Enchanted April," which drew English readers to the Italian Riviera, was also born on this coast. After a stroll and free time around the colourful piazzetta, we return to Santa Margherita and then travel back to Torino. Overnight in Torino.

DAY 03 TORINO: MAUTO – MOLE ANTONELLIANA AND NATIONAL CINEMA MUSEUM – MILAN

After breakfast we continue our tour of Torino. First, we visit the Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile – MAUTO, which tells how this city, where FIAT was founded in 1899, transformed Italy into an industrial nation. In the museum on the banks of the Po river, the collection ranging from the first motor vehicles to the classic models of Italian design treats the automobile as much an engineering product as a social history and matter of style. Here we also see the influence of Torinese design schools such as Pininfarina and Giugiaro on world automotive aesthetics. Then we proceed to the Mole Antonelliana, which dominates the city's skyline. Begun in 1863 by architect Alessandro Antonelli as a synagogue, but handed over to the municipality due to its growing height, and completed in 1889 when it was one of the tallest brick structures in the world, the monument today houses the National Cinema Museum. Through galleries rising beneath the dome, we discover how Torino, before Rome, was the capital of Italian cinema, with early major productions such as Cabiria in 1914, and a path running from optical toys to film sets. Visiting times may be adjusted according to museum working days and booking slots. After free time for lunch, we leave Torino and reach Milan through the rice fields of the Po plain. Upon arrival we check into our hotel. Overnight in Milan.

DAY 04 MILAN: DUOMO – GALLERIA – LA SCALA – HEMINGWAY'S MILAN – CASTELLO SFORZESCO

After breakfast we begin our city tour of Milan. Construction of the Duomo began in 1386, and its façade was only completed at the beginning of the 19th century by order of Napoleon; with its over five-century building process, it stands as a monument to the patience and wealth of the city. We examine from the square this marble façade with its thousands of statues, the most ambitious example of Italian Gothic. Then we pass through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, designed by Giuseppe Mengoni in the early years of united Italy and one of the most magnificent glass-roofed arcades in 19th-century Europe, to reach the front of La Scala Opera House, opened in 1778. From there, on a walk along Via Manzoni, we follow, with our guide's commentary, the area where the young Hemingway was treated after being wounded at the front in 1918 at the American Red Cross Hospital, and how this period is reflected in the Milan scenes of "A Farewell to Arms." We complete our walk via Via Dante in the courtyards of Castello Sforzesco, the palace of the Sforza dynasty where Leonardo da Vinci worked in the service of Ludovico il Moro. In the afternoon, free time to explore individually the fashion district of Quadrilatero della Moda, framed by Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga, or the art galleries of Brera. We meet at the time indicated by our guide and return to the hotel. Overnight in Milan.

DAY 05 LAKE COMO – STRESA – LAKE MAGGIORE – MALPENSA – ISTANBUL

After breakfast we complete our hotel check-out formalities and, with our luggage, head to the Alpine lakes region shaped by glaciers. Our first stop is Como. In the town where the Roman writer Pliny the Younger was born and the inventor of the battery, Alessandro Volta, spent his life, we take a short walk from the Duomo, which combines Gothic and Renaissance styles, through the historic centre extending to the lakeside, and enjoy the lake view opening onto the Alpine silhouette. Lake Como, which features frequently in 19th-century literature from Shelley's letters to Stendhal's novels, became a way of life with the villas of European aristocracy. Then we continue to Stresa on the shore of Lake Maggiore. With its elegant lakeside promenade, Belle Époque hotels and views towards the Borromean Islands, Stresa also secured its place in diplomatic history with the 1935 Stresa Conference, where the heads of government of England, France and Italy met at the Borromeo Palace on Isola Bella. The young Hemingway, whose traces we followed in Milan the day before, came here in autumn 1918 to convalesce; the lake scenes in the final chapters of "A Farewell to Arms" were born from these days. After lunch on the lakeside and free time, we meet at the time indicated by our guide and transfer to Milan Malpensa Airport, about an hour away. After ticketing and baggage procedures, we depart for Istanbul at 19:45 on Turkish Airlines flight TK1876. Arrival at Istanbul Airport at 23:40 marks the end of our tour. We hope to meet you again on our next journey.
