"As a result of the studies conducted so far, Göbeklitepe is one of the oldest known temples located in the Mesopotamia region. Göbeklitepe provides significant data about the religious beliefs of hunter-gatherer societies. We will examine Göbeklitepe both architecturally and socio-economically, sharing insights on how the people of that era created a sacred space to experience their groundbreaking beliefs, shedding light on their religion, religious symbols, technology, and sciences. Following this, we will head to our hotel to enjoy a night full of entertainment (extra) and prepare for the next day after resting.
DAY 2: HARRAN-SOGMATAR-KARAHAN TEPE
After breakfast at the hotel, we will head to Harran. Here, we will see the conical-roofed earth houses of Harran, the ancient ruins of Harran University, recognized as the world’s first Islamic university, and the historical Harran Castle from the time it served as the capital for the Umayyads, along with the surrounding Harran walls. We will visit the tomb of the famous local saint Hayat el-Harrani before moving on to Sogmatar. Sogmatar, which dates back to the Roman period (2nd century AD), has been scientifically determined to be a cultural center where the Harranians worshiped lunar and planetary deities during the Abgar Kingdom period. The Sogmatar sacred site includes a cave (Pognon Cave) dedicated to the moon god Sin, a hill (Sacred Hill) with remnants of god carvings and inscriptions, six square and round planned mausoleums, an inner castle, and numerous rock tombs carved into the main rock. Later, we will continue to Karahantepe, a recently discovered site that is around 400 years older than Göbeklitepe, where excavation work is still ongoing, and we will share the excitement of being among the first visitors to this significant discovery before bidding farewell to our guests at the airport…
